Silver Proof Sets
I have a complete set of ASE Proofs in the original mint boxes, but have been considering getting a graded set. I have the option of 2 different sets, and since I am not real familiar with the graded coins yet, thought I would ask your opinions.
Set 1 - PCGS all DCAM 69's, includes 1995-P, no 1995-W or 2006 RP for $2115 Set 2 - NCG all Ultra Cameo 69's, includes 1995-P, no 1995-W or 2006 RP for $1500 I know that NCG has lost a little prestige lately, but is the PCGS set worth the extra $600. I do not intend on trying to turn these around for a quick profit, they are for my own collection and I intend to hold them for some time. Which set will have the better Numismatic value over time? |

And before the stupid attacks start - cause they always do - check EBay and APMEX and see if PCGS doesn't ALWAYS (95% at least) get a higher premium!!!! I said - IMO - but the fact is - its a fact!!! Now - let the non-numismatic experts let loose on me! Cheers! |

Re: Silver Proof Sets
The main reason I didn't send in my Mint Proofs is that I don't know how to go about submitting them. And I don't know anyone in my area that is into that kind of thing. I am real new to anything that is graded. I have mainly bought directly from the Mint in the past or picked up bullion online or through Ebay.
I have only recently gotten interested in the Numismatic side of the coins. Up until now I have mainly bought for the value, or occasionally because I just liked how something looked. My favorite purchase to date is my complete collection of 1oz and 2oz Silver Australian Lunars, they look so beautiful in their cases. |

And yes, I have all those lunars in silver in both 1 & 2 oz sets.........the one ounce sets look even nicer in their red-velvet boxes!!! Trying to find boxes for the 2 oz sizes but its hard to find. I like the new Series 2 mouse coins in silver even better! |
Re: Silver Proof Sets
I found the case for my 2oz Lunars here http://delriocoin.com/pg4a-AusLunar.html
It is just like the case for the 1oz Lunars just a bit bigger. I will go to the PCGS site and see what I can find out. Thanks for the suggestion. Quote:

Re: Silver Proof Sets
Have any of you sent Mint encapsulated Proofs in to PCGS to be graded?
Just wondering how I could get any idea of what the average Proof from the Mint would grade out at. I have looked at some graded coins over at the one Coin Store here in town, don't buy there often as he's way overpriced, and quite frankly I do not see any difference in the 69's and 70's except for price. Just wondering as to what everyone else's experiance has been and how you decide what to have graded. |

I have - tho mostly both proofs and regular business strikes (or uncirculated) and the difference between MS70 and MS 69 is incredibly minor - but the fact is -under a microscope - a MS69 has a tiny something a MS 70 does not. I had something come back under a MS 70 - neither my dealer friends nor I could see why - even with my magnifying goggles I couldn't see it.......but when I lowered the loop that comes with it - there was the tiniest little pit - it disappeared unless one had the equivalent of a microscope. But as to what you have graded - for me - it hinges on whether there is a substantial difference in price if there is. I have platinum from 1997, its first year, and it was once touched once. When I saw that the coins were getting a higher premium if they were graded - and a friend pointed out it was probably an MS 68 or 69, we figured it was worth grading. Now - to be sure - some here will go on long tirades about how people are fools to pay extra for graded coins - but first of all, most of then are NOT into numismatics (they have opinions but not based on actual experience -not all, but many of them).....and second, if you are going to sell, graded coins - and especially those graded by PCGS, and to a lesser extent NGC, get more money because people can buy them in confidence that the grade is what it is. I get mine graded cause I figure, one day - even if long down the road - I will want to sell and they will be ready - I won't have to wait for grading or lose what I MIGHT get on a coin cause the grade posted is MY opinion and not a good third-party grade. Hope that helps. |
Re: Silver Proof Sets
Thank you Master Ho for your information.
I don't see much use in getting the business strike bullion that I hold graded. I bought most of that just to hold value and have in case TSHTF and our economy hits the skids. I do not plan on having much graded, just my Proofs and a maybe a few specialty coins that I have. Anything I get graded will be mainly for my own personal gratification and viewing pleasure and are items that I don't ever plan to sell unless push comes to shove. |
